The Old Man

At the doctor, in the waiting room, it’s early morning. A couple is seated on a sofa. The man is carrying their little, crying baby. Nurses are walking around and a cleaner that has entered the room, says “good morning” and puts more coffee in the cofee machine. A young lady is reading a book, next to the window. There is a door in the room.

An old man and his son are in the center of the room. The old man is seated on a two seat sofa and the son is standing besides him, in the left side. A wheelchair is right behind them.

The son - Father, you have to drink some water before doing the exam.

Old Man - Why they are taking so long to call me?

The Son - Father, would you please drink this water?

The son is holding a plastic cup of water and gives it to his father.

Old Man - I’m tired of being here waiting. God! I can’t stand anymore!!!

The Son - They are going to call you soon, dad. Drink this water.

The nurse calls the name of the young lady. She closes the book, gives a smile to the old man and follows the nurse. The door closes.

Old Man - Have you checked the expiration date?

The Son - What do you mean father? Water doesn’t have expiration date!

Old Man - Everything does…

The Son - Drink dad. Take these pills as well. It’s time already.

Old Man - Ok.

The old man drinks the water and takes the pills. The son is walking around the room and looks through the window. The couple are arguing and the baby keeps crying. The woman takes the baby on her arms.

The nurse opens the door and calls for the old man’s name.

The Son - Let’s go, father. I will help you.

Old Man - Ok, let’s go.

The Son - Father, you have to stand up. I will help you.

Old Man - Why? It’s fine. I will go on the wheelchair.

The Son - But father, you are not on the wheelchair. Let’s change to the wheelchair. I’ll help you.

The son carries his father and when the old man is up, his pants go down. He’s wearing dippers.
The couple stop talking and the baby keeps crying, but lower.

The son pulls up his pants and puts him on the wheelchair. The nurse opens the door. They follow the nurse in silence and the door closes.
